Lower School 

In Years 7 and 8, we follow the "Zoom 1" Spanish course.  Spanish is taught covering all four skills:  listening, reading, writing and speaking.  This course covers all styles of learning, including aural, visual and kinaesthetic.  Every student can access the text book at home via "Kerboodle" and complete extension work as well as the listening texts.  In the classroom, students are expected to use all four skills.  All students are expected to learn vocabulary thoroughly as part of their assessment process includes vocabulary tests.  The reading of authentic texts and group talk is being enhanced, in line with the new government guidelines.  We encourage students to mark their own or their partner's work in order to improve their thinking skills and analytical capabilities.  We cover the topics of the classroom, animals, descriptions, nationalities, spare time and daily routine.  In Year 8 we introduce the future tense and the preterite.

Students’ progress is regularly assessed in the four skill areas: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. Teaching methods include regular use of CDs, worksheets, group and pair work, and the Interactive Whiteboards. Group work and pair work help students to practise, develop and revise what they have learnt.

Upper School

Year 9

In Year 9 we start Listos 2 which consolidates grammar and vocabulary learnt in Years 7 and 8  We continue to cover all four skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking.  We emphasise the correct use of grammar and we also make vocabulary and tenses learning a more important feature of the lessons.  In the classroom we make sure everyone has the chance to participate orally and the listening skill is practised regularly.  Pair work is key to oral success and it also enhances students' confidence in general.  We are also able to send work home via the VLE for students to access, especially if they are finding it challenging on occasions.

Year 10

In line with the new GCSE, we are following the new Edexcel syllabus which includes reading authentic articles from the Spanish press and the opportunity to speak more spontaneously.  All four skills are examined in the summer.  Students will be expected to learn grammar and vocabulary thoroughly.  We also expect them to use homework time to revise the work covered in the lesson and then they are tested fortnightly.

We provide access to websites where this is made available for students who prefer more modern ways of learning vocabulary.  We cover tourism and holidays, school, describing your family and the world of work.

Year 11

In Year 11, we continue with the Edexcel syllabus, and cover spare time, the environment, youth issues and consolidate tenses and grammar.

In the classroom, we make sure everyone has the chance to participate orally in order to increase their confidence and the techniques for the listening and reading examinations are revised.  Techniques for improving the oral skill are practised and translation and prose are introduced.

The use of the Internet, with "Quizlet" and "thisislanguage" is encouraged and oral practice in the language laboratory is encouraged.

Sixth Form

We offer a two year course of study in Spanish through the Eduqas Examination Board.


We now follow the new syllabus which deals with Spain and South America, their culture, way of life and society. We also expect pupils to be able to write about a film in depth, and discuss the impact of modern society on young people in Spain and other Spanish speaking countries. There is an emphasis on culture and the impact modern life is having on the traditions and way of life.


We now follow the EDUQAS A2 examination and the emphasis is on the influence that Franco had on Spain, the effects of the Post-war on society, and how it has shaped modern Spanish politics. Issues, including the role of the media, racism, immigration, social exclusion and integration, terrorism, world of work (employment, commerce, globalisation, etc) are all discussed within the framework of Spanish society.

We also study one book and one film in depth, which form part of the written paper. 

We take the Sixth Form on a Spanish Exchange if the opportunity arises.  Currently, we have an exchange programme with the "Sevilla Este" School in School which happens most years.
