From the minute we get up until the time we go to bed, we are bombarded with the experience of modern life covered by the world of media. Television, radio, print media, cinema and the Internet all channel information, education, politics, art and entertainment. It is easy to argue that the mass media not only reflect our attitudes and values, they also help to shape them. How they do that, why they do that, and the effect that has on individuals, communities and cultures, are issues at the heart of Media Studies.  The media is always hungry for people with lots of ideas and initiative, who can realise those ideas and make them happen in an entertaining and informative way.

Sixth Form

The two-year A level Media Studies course in Sixth Form provides an exciting range of modules in a supportive and challenging environment which will allow students to develop their personal talents along with strong analytical and research skills, creativity, drive and initiative. They will learn the necessary technical skills to understand, and have competence in, the different media processes, as well as knowledge of the codes and practices essential for producing any kind of creative work. Students will learn how to understand media texts from across the three media platforms: Broadcast, Print and E-media; exploring how they are constructed, how audiences are targeted and the way different groups and institutions are represented in the media.

Media Studies naturally leads to careers in journalism, marketing, advertising or public relations, but an awareness of how the world of media works can also support other careers, such as social work, law, medicine and education. By knowing how the media operates students are likely to be able to decode messages more skillfully and engage with topics that interest them.
